Bulls and Celtics Share Pain at Heartbreak Hotel
The Chicago Bulls and the Boston Celtics had the chance to lick their wounds together following their Game 1 losses in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. Both teams are staying at the same hotel in New York.
‘‘This was a quiet, dark hotel last night. The New York-area teams didn’t treat the guests very well,’’ Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Sunday.
Rivers is right about that. The Bulls looked completely stupefied as the Brooklyn Nets easily cruised to a 106-89 victory over Chicago on Saturday. The Celtics held on for three quarters before the New York Knicks took over in the fourth quarter in route to 87-75 win.
Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, previously an assistant coach under Rivers in Boston when the team won it all in 2008, had to pass up an opportunity to go to dinner with his old boss.
‘‘Unfortunately, I missed the free dinner,’’ Thibodeau said. ‘‘It pained me to miss it.’’
Not as much as it pained him and Chicago Bulls fans nationwide to watch the team in that Game 1 loss.
‘‘It’s just not a good hotel today,’’ Rivers said. ‘‘Two losing teams. I think one should leave.’’
Both teams may not have to wait much longer to exit the hotel if their dismal play on the court continues.
Chicago plays Brooklyn in Game 2 tonight. Boston faces New York on Tuesday.
